The Embodied Archive in the Age of Climate Chaos

Abstract

This paper argues that tattooing is one of the oldest continuous forms of participatory, embodied, community-held meaning-making on earth. Tracing convergent marking traditions across the circumpolar north, the Pacific, North Africa, and Japan. These embodied marks connect human traditions to the contemporary tattoo parlour as a site of community knowledge production. The paper proposes that the triangulation of body, mark, and community constitutes a survival technology of demonstrable antiquity. A recurring structure emerges from the historical record: colonial authority, in each case, moved to suppress the mark. The mark survived. In the context of climate chaos and the social contraction it produces, this type of human community is structurally necessary. The paper is co-produced through Complicit Praxis, a methodology positioning the AI system Claude as a collaborator named that brings the disembodied dependent with a physical infrastructure that has a temporal collision with climate chaos. This research praxis turns the collaborator into an agent of resistance.
